Active volcanoes from the cabin — Etna, Fuji, Kilauea
because you need to know when you fly over Etna, Fuji or Kilauea.
Volcanoes look different from the air than you’d expect. On the ground, a volcano is a mountain with a hole on top. From FL370, it’s a circular cut through the surrounding terrain, often with a wisp of plume or a faint shadow of ash dust. The visual vocabulary is different.
Three active volcanoes that scheduled flights regularly pass.
Etna — Sicily
Visible on most southern Italy and Tunisia routings. Etna is 3,357 m, high enough to spot in average visibility, and its characteristic sulphur plume turns dramatic in sunset light. When it’s actively erupting (several times a year), you see lava glow from the window — I caught it once on a ZRH–CTA approach, a pulsing red dot on the horizon.
Routes with view: ZRH–CTA, MUC–CAT, FRA–TUN, MUC–MLA. Side depends on routing — usually right on southern approaches.
Mount Fuji — Japan
Seeing the world’s most famous volcano from a plane window is surprisingly easy. On any HND–CTS or NRT–KIX domestic, you pass close enough. With clear weather (more common in winter), the view is iconic: snow-capped cone with a circular shadow form around the summit.
Fuji hasn’t erupted since 1707. But it’s officially classified as active. From the window, it’s the textbook example of a stratovolcano cone.
Best routes: HND–CTS (Sapporo), HND–OKA (Okinawa), Tokyo–Osaka. Left side on southern approach, right on northern.
Kilauea — Hawaii
The only volcano on the list that’s been continuously active since 1983 (with pauses). On a flight from Honolulu to Hilo (HNL–ITO) or any Big Island routing, you often see lava fields, sometimes active flows. On night flights, glow points from the crater are visible from 11 km up.
Routes: HNL–ITO inter-island, plus long-haul to Hawaii (LAX–HNL with southern routing).
Practical for all three
- Visibility: volcanoes need clear air. Ash plumes or cloud decks hide them.
- Time of day: daytime for the form. Nighttime for active eruptions (glow visibility).
- Skyty Landmark Spotter: will surface these volcanoes as POIs as soon as you’re nearby.
- AGL readout: over Etna it drops to 7-8 km. Over Mount Fuji to 7 km. Over Kilauea (1,200 m), barely.
A caveat
Ash plumes after an eruption can close airspace — Eyjafjallajökull made this a global phenomenon in 2010. If a volcano is active and you’re flying that way, check VAAC aviation meteorology reports before departure. Routes are sometimes rerouted, occasionally cancelled.

Anyone who flies southern Italy regularly, or travels in Japan, already has it. If you’ve never been near an active volcano: a daytime HND–CTS in winter is the easiest way in.
